Edge of the Reef

The Edge of the Reef Exhibit is a 7,500-gallon (28,400 liter) outdoor exhibit
that recreates a profile of habitats you might find along a Hawaiian rocky shoreline.
This exhibit was constructed and opened in 1986 and is a pioneer of the touch pool exhibits now so popular in aquariums worldwide.  It is the longest continuously running exhibit at the Aquarium. The animals in this exhibit are typical of the fishes and invertebrates you might see snorkeling along Hawaii's reefs, and include yellow tangs, parrotfish, butterflyfish, rice coral, sea cucumbers, and bright red pencil urchins. This exhibit also incorporates an interactive area where aquarium docent volunteers provide an up close and personal experience with some of the animals found in local tide pools.
