Waikiki Aquarium Hawaiian Monk Seal Internship Program
Semesters:Application Deadlines: Fall (mid August – mid January) e.g. Aug 15 – Jan 15 May 1 Spring (beginning January – end May) e.g. Jan 2 – May 30 September 15 Summer (mid May – end August) e.g. May 15 – Aug 30 February 1
Minimum Requirements: Minimum sophomore standing in college/university Must be able to speak and comprehend English Ability to work unsupervised Ability to follow instructions Able to work in outdoor climate Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Detail oriented Team player Strong interest in marine mammals – husbandry, care, training Able to work 20 hours/week for the chosen semester, will include weekend and holiday work; also will include a variety of schedules (5 days/week; AM 7-11; weekly pool cleaning Wed 4-8pm on alternating weeks)
Desirable Requirements: Comfortable with public speaking Experience with marine mammal or large animal handling
Duties Include: · Daily habitat cleaning/maintenance · Daily diet preparation · Maintaining supplies and facility at APHIS/IACUC standards and cleanliness · Public narration during feeding sessions/Q+A with public · Wednesday evening pool cleaning (utilizing pressure washers to clean the drained pool; interns will alternate weeks for cleaning) · Record keeping · Database entry · Participation in training sessions (to assist with daily health exams, husbandry sessions, and research data collection) · Assist with feeding seals · Participate in training program: to include reading training manual, attend trainers meetings, take quizzes to test knowledge obtained
Other: Interns are unpaid, responsible for their own transportation and housing/expenses on Oahu. Interns must commit to full length of internship from the start and all start/end date discrepancies must be discussed prior to start of internship; two positions/semester available
